How many employees can you have?

Until the second slot opens you are effectively the second cashier. One player put it plainly: “You are the second cashier till you unlock it.” Hiring and paying staff is done on the shop computer, and wages appear on the end-of-day ledger next to supply costs and fines.

Roles: cashier, restocker, cleaner

A player at level 16 with two workers reports that each one can be set to cashier, restocker or cleaner. Early on some players only see cashier or nobody, which suggests the other roles unlock with level too.

What the roles are good for:

  • Cashier keeps the queue moving. Customers line up at the register that has a cashier on it, not at an empty second register, even when you stand behind the empty one.
  • Restocker refills shelves from boxes. Players have two complaints: it drops empty boxes on the floor, which counts against cleanliness, and it puts any product on any free shelf, so a tidy layout gets mixed up.
  • Cleaner deals with trash. Trash, graffiti and boxes left outside all lower the cleanliness bar; see thieves, vandals and trash.

Do employees level up?

Not automatically, and this is the most asked employee question in launch week. Several players filled an employee’s XP bar and saw no change. Two players then reported the missing step: a rank-up from Junior to Regular appears on the computer at higher shop levels. One saw it at level 20, another at level 24. Until you reach that level a full bar does nothing you can see.

You can also boost an employee for a day from the computer. Players describe it as a paid one-day speed-up, not a permanent upgrade. One reported spending $1,200 on boosts before realising the rank itself had not changed.

Other oddities players have noticed and that are not explained in game:

  • The employee’s hair and appearance can change from day to day.
  • Cashiers do not check customers for stolen items.
  • At closing time a cashier may walk off with customers still in line.

The restocker crash and the fix

The biggest employee bug at launch: the game crashes when a restocker starts working, when you flip the sign to Open with a restocker assigned, or when the restocker throws away an empty box.

The workaround most players confirmed: move your warehouse shelving away from the walls. Several players reported it fixed the crash straight away, and one shared a screenshot of a warehouse layout with every shelf pulled off the wall. Others said Hotfix 1.0.2 (September 12) fixed it for them. A few still crash with any employee, so if moving shelves does not help, set both employees to cashier until the next patch.

More crash fixes, including the broken-save repair, are on the crashes and known issues page.

Are employees worth it early?

Players are split. Employees cost money every day and early ones are slow, but launch week also brought complaints about far too many customers for one person. What works for most people is to hire a cashier as soon as you can afford one and do the restocking yourself. When the second slot opens at 16, add a restocker, with the shelves off the wall. What each level opens is on the shop level page.
